Cities are tangible places, the loci of human activities. However, cities are also objects of imagination. The imagined representations of places are a blend of collectively constructed visions and individual experiences; they reflect realistic views as well as hopes and desires of residents. As such, local identity is not static, but dynamic, remade by the ever-changing perceptions and demands of residents.
Reimaging places is a process fuelled by the desire of both local governments and local civil society to address severe issues, such as socio-economic disparities, urban decay and environmental degradation. Place-imagining means elaborate alternative visions for cities, unmaking and remaking their identity. It is not just about fantasising about utopic localities. It is also about outlining the future direction of urban development. Indeed, urban models, such as the sustainable city, the smart city or the creative city, constitute the blueprint for local governments’ efforts to shape a new identity and to devise their own pathways towards alternative urban futures.
By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, encompassing sociology, urban studies and environmental psychology, this workshop will illustrate how local identity-building is a dynamic process constructed by social, political and cultural dynamics. To do so, the scholarly debate on this topic, corroborated by real-world examples, will be illustrated.
